School Started and Education Goals

My husband started class tonight. He is taking two this semester – paid by Tuition Assistance and TopUp. Luckily for him, the book he needed for tonight’s class happened to arrive with today’s mail!

My plan for school this semester is to test out of at least two classes. When I transferred colleges (as so many military wives end up doing!) I was told I needed an additional math credit. I admit I was upset – I thought I took all the math I needed to at my first college. My second college said I needed another one and I took a Stats class (that’s what worked for my major). But now that I’m on to my third college they are telling me I need Algebra. I wish they would make up their minds!

So I will test out of algebra this spring and figure out another class I can test out of. You’ve heard of CLEP and DANTES exams right? They are exams you take and when you pass, you receive college credit as though you took the actual class. My husband has taken quite a few of these. But be sure to check with your college before you decide you want to take a lot of them, they may limit how many you can transfer in.

Active duty military (as least Navy) can take the tests for free via the Navy College office. Spouses can sign up to take the tests as well, but we have to pay. I don’t think it is more then $70, but let me get back to you on that.

I know I can only transfer in five CLEP/DANTES exams so I am going to pick which ones I take wisely.

Just one more reason why getting your education in the military is a VERY smart idea – it is FREE, even testing out of classes is.
