Living Near Family and What It Costs

We’ve already decided that once finished with the military, we are going to settle where our family is. I know a lot of military people are not like that – they settle wherever they are at the last place or go to where the job is. Of course going to where you can get a job is a top priority as well. But we would much rather live in the west or midwest as opposed to being on the east coast like we are now. It’s been a year already and while our friends are nice, we are still getting used to living here.

My brothers talk about moving a few times a year. The most recent has been interest of moving to work for one of our cousins. He is high up in the company he works for and said they are free to apply and see what happens. They would both need more training though and haven’t sat down to work out what needs to be done.

When I think of moving though, the first thing I do is look at real estate. I find out what is there, what I could get for my money and compare it to real estate markets I already know about. My cousin works in Boise, ID, so I looked up Boise real estate and other houses in the surrounding area. Most of one side of my family lives in Idaho or Nevada so I know the area fairly well.

After getting lost in the Boise MLS search, I think the real estate there is comparable to the real estate in Washington where we used to live. Of course living here in the south I had a minute of sticker shock LOL but if I put myself back in my WA shoes, it was about the same. I held off from searching for land though – it’s been so tempting to buy land to save for when we retire!
