Check out this easy to use online mortgage calculator. I plugged in the numbers for our various mortgages and home equity loan just so I could see the charts. Wow I’m always amazed at how much interest we will end up paying! Seeing it in numbers (an amortization schedule is included) as well as the colorful charts just puts it in your face.

Do you have a plan for your mortgage? We want to pay extra payments starting within the next few years. One of our mortgages is only for twenty years (rather then the standard thirty) and after plugging that into the mortgage calculator it was nice to see an almost 50/50 split between interest and principal. Of course paying that is still crazy. Check out the calculator to see what your payment could be (are you looking to buy a house now?) or just what your various stats are.
